What Is Tang Soo Do? A Beginner's Guide

By Bob Barron

Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art with roots in classical Karate, built around striking technique, structured forms (hyung), and a strong emphasis on character development.

A Brief History

Tang Soo Do developed in Korea in the mid-20th century, drawing on centuries of Korean martial tradition alongside Okinawan and Japanese Karate influences, resulting in a distinct striking-based art with its own belt system and philosophy.

Core Techniques

Students learn hand strikes, kicks, blocks, stances, and forms (hyung) that combine to build both physical skill and mental discipline. At more advanced belt levels, students may also train in traditional weapons.

The Five Tenets

Most Tang Soo Do schools, including Barron's Martial Arts, teach core values: Integrity, Concentration, Perseverance, Respect and Confidence, Humility, and Indomitable Spirit — values meant to extend far beyond the training floor.

Who Can Practice Tang Soo Do?

Virtually anyone — Tang Soo Do is taught at Barron's Martial Arts to children as young as 5 through adults, with programs specifically designed for each age group.
